John Leach Pottery
JOHN LEACH, eldest grandson of renowned potter, Bernard Leach, and son of David Leach, continues the family tradition at Muchelney Pottery, on the edge of the ancient village of Muchelney, in the heart of the Somerset Levels. Muchelney kitchen pots are used daily in kitchens all over the world, but the pottery is still very much a small family business. The pots are all lovingly hand-thrown, using local clays, and wood-fired in the three-chambered kiln to the high stoneware temperature of 1320°C, which creates their distinctive "toasted" finish.

Burrow Hill Cider Farm
At Burrow Hill apples have been grown and cider has been pressed for at least 150 years. It is the soil, climate and apple varieties which give their cider and cider brandy its unique quality. Visitors are welcome to view the copper stills, protected by armoured plated glass and 68 locks and seals (by order of HM Customs & Excise) in the distillery. In the ciderhouse there is cider and Cider Brandy to sample amongst the oak vats, barrels and presses - all the paraphernalia associated with 150 years of cidermaking.

Barrington Court
& Garden (National Trust)

Influenced by Gertrude Jekyll, this enchanting formal garden is laid out in a series of walled rooms which are awash with colour. The working stone-walled kitchen garden produces a variety of wonderful fruit and vegetables, which can be enjoyed in the restaurant, while the arboretum delights visitors with vivid autumn hues. The Tudor manor house was restored in the 1920s by the Lyle family and is currently let to Stuart Interiors as showrooms. Here visitors are treated to a rather different kind of visit, with the opportunity to purchase splendid antique or reproduction furniture.
